Where Has The Time Gone?

Gosh - can it really have been that long since I posted a blog entry? What can I say - I have just been incredibly busy and very tired. I am rehearsing with 3 different bands at the moment, which means I have to learn well over 100 songs, on top of my regular recording & guitar teaching work and my family, domestic and Church duties (which thankfully are light at the moment).

Tonight we took the children to a firework display. Up till now they have never stayed for more then 30 seconds at a firework display because they get scared by it all, especially the loud bangs, but we thought that now they are 10 and 8 we might stand a chance. We were doing very well - there were tramploines, a giant slide and a bouncy castle there so the kids were excited and distracted. We were even doing quite well 5 minutes into the firework display. Our oldest was actually enjoying it, and our youngest was kind of enjoying it whilst still being a bit scared, but not scared enough to want to leave. Then it happened: a firework must have toppled over as it lit, and lo and behold it came whooshing over straight towards us. It came so fast that by the time the thought went through my head that I should throw myself in front of her to protect her the thing had already landed about 10 feet short of us. I wouldn't have had time to react. There was also a metal fence in between us - it landed about 9 inches on the right side of the fence, so we would hopefully have been protected by that too if it had come to it.

Now, having been no stranger to danger in my younger days, and having had a suicidally casual attitude towards fireworks as a boy, I wasn't particularly bothered by it, but my 8-year-old was distraught, and understandably so. She had, after all, just conquered a fear that she had had all her life, and then almost got nuked! Who knows how long it will take her to get over it again now? Maybe we'll have to watch fireworks on the telly next year?

Sometimes life just sucks.
