It's A Scary World Sometimes

I've just finished reading the local newspaper, which is published weekly. In amongst the usual interesting stuff about flower arranging exhibitions at the local church hall and chavs being fined for assault and drunkenness etc. there was a very disturbing account of how a 10-year-old girl on her way back from her primary school (not the one my children attend but only a couple of miles away) had been the subject of an attempted abduction. Apparently a man in a car had pulled over and told her to get in his car, saying that he knew her father. Fortunately the girl managed to run off and the man turned his car around, tried again to persuade her to get in then drove away.

I recall a similar incident much nearer to where I live only a year or two ago. It is truly frightening to hear these kind of stories. As a father I would obviously protect my daughters to the point of giving my own life if necessary, but if I am not there I cannot do anything to protect them. I can only hope that the things Betty and I have taught them have sunk in enough so that if they did face a similar situation they would be able to get away. Let's hope we never have to find out.
