What A Weird Experience!

This entry is taking longer to write than usual as I have to type it with one hand. In fact I have to get used to doing a lot of things with one hand for a couple of weeks as I have just come back from hospital with my left arm in a sling. The reason for this is that I have FINALLY had the carpal tunnel in my left wrist operated on. In fact it is now not a tunnel at all, having been sliced open to allow the median nerve that has been trapped under it for a long time to become free. The good part is that when it heals I will be free from the numbness and loss of feeling in many of my fingers that I have had for quite some time - not a good thing for a guitar teacher to suffer from, you are probably thinking, and you would be right. I am so looking forward to being able to play guitar really well again, having had for so long to wince at the occasional duff note when my fingers refused to obey my brain. The bad thing is that the anaesthetic has worn off and it hurts like hell! The weird thing, though, was being awake as it was done, as I had local anaesthetic. It was almost surreal. I could feel the sensation of having my skin cut and clamped etc. although obviously it didn't hurt. What I hadn't expected though was the sensation in my fingers after the nerve became free. Even under anaesthetic it felt like severe electric shocks going through my hand. It was totally freaky. I was extremely impressed with the cleanliness of the ward, indeed of the whole place. On my last couple of stays in hospital, just over 3 years ago, I had been appalled at the filthiness around me. There was dust and dirt under the beds for days on end, faeces on the toilet floor uncleaned for several hours despite the nurses being told about it etc. It wasn't a huge surprise that I came out with MRSA. I am just thankful I survived it. This time though - WOW, what a difference. It was like staying in Kim & Aggie's home - I have never seen so much cleaning going on in a hospital. I could have eaten my dinner off the floor! Everything in sight was disinfected and cleaned regularly - and I was only there a few hours. Yes I was highly impressed. Anyway, enough rambling - I'm off to take some painkillers and crash out, because you know we men can't handle pain!
