I'm Definitely Getting Old
Went to the pictures the other day to see Happy Feet with Betty and the kids. All the way through the trailers and adverts 2 girls of about 12 or 13 sitting behind us were busy chatting away and texting, but that didn't bother me as I wasn't interested in anything on screen at that time. They calmed down when the film started and were no bother. What absolutely floored me was towards the end of the film, when I started getting distracted by a bright light a few rows in front. I didn't know what it was at first - thought someone may be playing with a torch or something. As it continued, however, I looked more closely and saw that it was a 10-year-old or thereabouts girl texting constantly as the film played. Now I know I am getting old but my mind just boggles at this. Here was a film on current cinema release, that she probably hadn't seen before, a film that was quite good and interesting and aimed at her age group, and her attention span was so pathetic that she just had to get her mobile out and start texting her mates or whoever. No, I'm sorry but I don't think I will ever understand! What was even more astonishing was seeing her grandmother (I assume) sitting next to her looking at her texting and saying nothing at all. If my kids had done that the phone would be in the bin! That is academic at the moment though because, despite their pleading, we have told them that they are not getting one before they start secondary school and that is that. Harrumph!!
