The Story Continues

Last night we had a visit from the police, who were doing door-to-door enquiries. They asked me more questions about what I had heard on the night of the murder. Tonight I had a visit from two policemen assigned to the Humberside MIT (Major Incident Team, responsible for conducting investigations into serious crimes, mainly murder). They spent an hour questioning me and taking a Witness Statement. They say that if and when they catch the killer I may have to go to court and give evidence. As far as I can see the only thing my "evidence" adds to the investigation is confirmation that at about the time of the murder I heard a man shouting in the street, which man may or may not have been the murderer. Therefore I doubt very much whether I will end up giving evidence in a murder trial, but it would be just my luck if I had to. Having said that I would not attempt to avoid it if it did happen. They also mentioned that defence counsel would have access to my statement, and without actually coming out and saying it they implied that I could very well be identified by what was in the statement and therefore potentially be prey to intimidation by lowlife scum associated with the murderer. I told them that I wasn't afraid of anyone (not strictly true - Betty scares me to death sometimes (lol), but I am certainly not scared of so-called "hard men". I think every person I have ever had a fight with when I was younger was either meant to have committed GBH on someone or was meant to be a karate expert etc. I managed to beat nearly all of them. I think I can be excused my loss to the genuine karate expert who went on to run his own Kung Fu club years later!) and that I certainly would not be intimidated. Then again the world has changed a lot since I was last involved with subhumans, many years having passed since those days, and I understand that if they cannot intimidate you they will simply threaten your family these days. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

The police now have CCTV footage of nearby streets (that's a handy thing about being very near the town centre), which shows a young man in a white coat turning round to walk in the opposite direction and and follow Sue towards her home (going within 20 ft of my house in the process!). This footage was taken about 50 yards from our house. The MIT guys said they are almost certain that they will get the killer, if nothing else than because of the tremendous advances in forensic science made in recent years. It sounds like he gave Sue a hell of a beating and took her handbag, which has still not been found. Therefore there must be all kinds of forensic evidence which, if they find him, should be his downfall. Let's hope they get him soon, as there is a real climate of fear around here. A young lady who comes to me for guitar lessons in the dark expressed her fears today, being thankful that she has a car to travel in, and I have seen female neighbours being walked to their doors by male friends and relatives. No women are walking alone in the dark round here at the moment. The MIT guys also said that this kind of crime is extremely rare in a place like Bridlington, and that once they have caught him there wasn't a great likelihood of it happening again. Mind you these days who knows - are people safe anywhere now?
